Tackling the Preservation Challenge: Practical Steps for Repository Managers

12th December 2008, by

On the 12th of December the Repositories Support Project held a joint event with the Digital Preservation Coalition, the Digital Curation Centre and JISC explore the issues surrounding digital preservation and repositories.

Presentations from Neil Beagrie (Charles Beagrie Ltd), Barbara Sierman (KB National Library of the Netherlands) and Rory McLeod (British Library) were well received, with delegates having no shortage of questions.

Delegates were then invited to participate in a 'marketplace' session, to meet service providers and representatives from a wide range of digital preservation projects.

Further presentations about preservation issues with regard to three of the leading repository softwares (DSpace, EPrints and Fedora) afforded delegates a snapshot of how these communities are addressing digital preservation.

After lunch, talks from Kevin Ashley (ULCC), Matthew Woollard (UK Data Archive) and Adrian Brown (The National Archives) set the tone for a lively and thought-provoking panel debate, chaired by Les Carr (University of Southampton).

Feedback from delegates has been very positive, demonstrating that delegates found this to be a useful event, and showing that repository managers really valued the opportunity to meet with preservation experts and develop strategies to take home with them.
