Bournemouth Professional Briefing event a Success

Bournemouth event for the RSP

On a wet and windy day in Bournemouth delegates gathered in the warm for the final professional briefing event of the series at Bournemouth University's Talbot Campus.

David Ball and Matt Holland then gave a very interesting insight into Bournemouth University's own EPrints repository, a presentation that was very well received by all the delegates. The presentation looked at how Bournemouth's repository has been developed; reflecting on the key decisions that were made leading to its success. The session concluded with a look toward the future of the repository along with a very useful question and answer session.

"A very informative course"

The morning continued with a Workshop lead by Chris Yates on Repository Stakeholders. The workshop set out to put delegates in the shoes of different repository stakeholders; publishers, academics and repository administrators to try and understand and empathise with the differing preconceptions of each of these groups. This workshop usually promotes a lively debate and this one did not disappoint.

Delegates than had the chance to have a well earned refreshment break before continuing with Speed Networking, facilitated by Steph Taylor. This session was a chance for delegates to talk to each other and RSP staff about issues concerning them in the repository environment.

The afternoon session began with a very informative session on the Version Identification Toolkit run by Jenny Brace, Dave Puplett and Catherine Jones of the Version Identification Framework project. The presentation looked into current versioning in repository software and how the new framework developed by the VIF project can help your repository.

The final workshop of the day was lead by Steve Hitchcock. This session looked at preservation and long term curation, a topic which strikes fear into many people. The workshop allowed delegates to think about different aspects of preservation in their own repositories, giving a good insight into what steps an administrator can take to ensure long term access to materials held in repositories.

"Found it really helpful. I went away with lots of answers and even more questions"

The day was brought to a close with some useful discussions on the day's topics, before delegates departed to digest a very informative day.
